League Deck Profile: CaptainMoustache

Back in February, we ran Animal Kingdom's first organized play experience: Adventure League Prologue: Goodbye, Namitori! It was a great success, with over 30 entrants and over 100 matches played across the month!

In this article, we'll be taking a look at the favourite deck of CaptainMoustache, a Mayor who earned the maximum number of points available and finished in the Top 5!

Why did you pick this attribute?

CaptainMoustache: While Authority is my favorite attribute to play, I wanted to see if I can make Mysticism work in both multiplayer and in a 1v1 match. Unlike other attributes Mysticism doesn’t have any focal point other than it is capable to freeze. So I wanted to explore in other ways what Natasha can do.

What is your deck's strategy?

CaptainMoustache: My main goal for this deck is to build up my Sola to recruit expensive adventurers, and make my party intimidating enough that other mayors can’t contest my party with over 17 combined stats or over 11 magic.

A wide stat spread is great for tackling certain quests.

What are your deck's key cards?

CaptainMoustache: Empower Spell for sure! One time I helped another Natasha in their quest to match the stats of a Tomoe player's party, and ended up playing 3 Empower Spell from my hand, which is enough for their Natasha to claim the quest.

Winds of the Wastes and Polassault are good removal to get rid of other mayor's combo cards, or cards that affect my board. Banther of Boreal Valley seems like it does not do much on the surface, but it’s a powerhouse that I can easily quest with 8 combined stats on Playing With Fire or Moonlight Sacrament.

Multiple buffs? Explosive quest phase!

What are your deck's difficult match-ups? Are there any cards your deck has trouble dealing with?

CaptainMoustache: This deck wins in a late game, so it would be difficult to match with Tomoe. I don’t think I have encountered Hinata with this deck, but I imagine it would be a fair match depending how much they can pilfer me. Cards that I have most difficulty with are Anxious Frostweaver and Brainwave, because they are expensive to play and to activate their ability, I rarely use them or just slum them in the early game. The only time they are useful is counting cards for Pripiri Water Dancer or saving them for Subterfuge’s discarding effects.

Thank you to CaptainMoustache for the insight into your deck! We found it interesting to see how somebody has put Banther of Boreal Valley to use as an important part of their strategy, as it's an expensive card, its statistics aren't focused, and it doesn't have an effect. It often goes overlooked!

However, as this mayor has observed, cards with spread out statistics can sometimes single-handedly claim quests like Playing With Fire.

Banther of Boreal Valley has the exact stats needed to complete the quest.
